O'Neil tried out for her third series of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still in high school. The contestant was able to climb to the top ten spots because of the enthusiasm shown by judges for her performance. O'Neil received praise of high quality from the judges, however she was a victim of significant loss during the top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals, when she was put into the bottom three and the bottom two spots, respectively. Judges were amazed at her performance and recommended viewers to select contestants who sang well like Melissa. In spite of consistently impressive performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. After two more breathtaking performance on September 7 2005, when O'Neil and Rex Goudie advanced to the competition's final two contestants, the judge Werner reportedly predicted that the newspaper headlines will read: O'Neil beat Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the most youthful winner in the competition's record . O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
