O'Grady lived in Wheaton, Illinois and graduated from Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the child of Jan O'Grady (a Financial planner) and Jim O'Grady. She was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jim and Jan O'Grady who were financial planners. Prior to making the move from Illinois to Los Angeles, she appeared in a variety of commercials. Her first assignment was modeling in the company of Montgomery Ward. She also featured in a variety of commercials. She played a role in the 1988 romantic comedic film called She's Having a Baby. She also played a part in the ABC comedy China Beach with Dana Delany. The other appearances she made on the guest list included TV shows as well as independent films, among many others. Donna Abandando is her first part as a main character in ABC's NYPD Blue. Her role as the tall and blonde squad secretary was performed from 1993 to 1996. For each of those years she won an Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Drama Series.
