Annette Funicello had just turned thirteen when Walt Disney, the studio's head of production, saw her performing in the Fullerton California amateur Swan Lake. Funicello was, much to the annoyance of the other Mickey Mouse Club stars, became a part of the cast once the initial season ended and was not required to be auditioned for. Disney proved correct when Funicello was The Mickey Mouse Club's most viewed performer. She also appeared as a character in Adventures in Dairyland, her storyline. It was soon clear that Funicello needed to make records for her to maximize her potential as a teen singer, and even though Annette did not seem to be very happy with her singing talent, Disney engaged established arranger Tutti Camerata, who would guide her career as an recording artist. Funicello gradually grew comfortable with recording and loved working with Camerata who was one of the few arrangers in their 40s that understood the fundamentals of early rock. Annette Sings Anka - her third album, was the first record to incorporate the songs of the rock star as part of her selection of songs. Funicello co-starred with Frankie Avalon in Beach Party. This was the first of a string of movies about beach parties which were hugely well-known. The scripts of all of these movies were thoroughly reviewed and endorsed by Walt Disney so as to protect Annette's image. Funicello's vehicles for film were utilized to make other artists break.
